The groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), also known as the peanut, goober, pindar or monkey nut, is a legume crop grown mainly for its edible seeds. The groundnut belongs to the botanical family Fabaceae (or Leguminosae), commonly known as the legume, bean, or pea family. Raw valencia peanuts are 4% water, 48% fat, 25% protein, and 21% carbohydrates, including 9% dietary fiber. Peanuts are rich in essential nutrients. In a reference amount of 100-gram (3+1⁄2-ounce), peanuts provide 2,385 kilojoules (570 kilocalories) of food energy, and are an excellent source of several B vitamins, vitamin E, several dietary minerals, such as manganese (95%), magnesium (52%) and phosphorus (48%), and dietary fiber. The fats are mainly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated.
